How to read each case

  • The question

The plain-language issue each decision actually answers.

  • What happened & why

The facts, the outcome, and the court's reasoning.

  • What it means

The pattern that matters, in language you can use.

Why precedent matters

Refusals follow patterns. So do the wins.

Most immigration refusals are not one-off decisions. Officers rely on the same handful of reasons again and again: insufficient funds, a study plan that "does not make sense," doubts about a job offer, or a belief that you will not leave Canada. The courts, in turn, have spent years defining when those reasons are fair and when they cross the line.

This library breaks down real, published decisions so you can see those patterns for yourself. Each case is written the same way: the question it answers, what happened, why the court decided as it did, and what it means in practice. We include cases where refusals were overturned and cases where they were upheld, because both teach you what a strong application actually looks like.

What this library cannot do is tell you whether your refusal fits any of these patterns. That depends on the specific reasons in your file. That is the assessment we do in a consultation.

Educational information, not legal advice. These summaries are general explanations of published court decisions and do not create a consultant-client relationship. Every case turns on its own facts, and the law changes. For advice on your own situation, book a consultation with our licensed RCIC.
