& WHAT IS A
WORK PERMIT?

A Work Permit is an official document issued by the Government of Canada that allows foreign nationals to work legally in Canada for a specific employer, occupation, and period of time. Most foreign workers must obtain a valid work permit before starting employment, as it grants them authorization to live and work in Canada while contributing to the country’s growing economy.

There are several types of work permits available — including employer-specific permits, which require a job offer and Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), and open work permits, which allow greater flexibility to work for any eligible employer in Canada. Each pathway is designed to attract skilled talent and support Canada’s labour market needs.

Your Work Permit is more than just authorization to work — it’s a pathway to valuable Canadian experience and often the first step toward permanent residence (PR). Before applying, ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements, have all necessary supporting documents, and understand which type of permit best fits your situation and long-term goals in Canada.

Canada offers a variety of work permit programs to meet different goals, skill levels, and personal circumstances. Whether you are an international graduate seeking Canadian experience, a skilled professional with a job offer, or a spouse accompanying a student or worker, there’s a specific work permit designed for your situation.

Each category has its own eligibility criteria, application steps, and benefits, depending on your status and long-term plans in Canada. Understanding which work permit type you qualify for is essential to ensure a smooth application process, maintain legal status, and build a clear pathway toward Permanent Residence (PR).

The Canadian government actively welcomes global talent to support its growing economy, address labour shortages, and strengthen communities across the country — making Canada one of the most attractive destinations in the world for skilled workers and international graduates alike.

& FAQ

0Do I need a work permit to work in Canada?

If you want to work in Canada as a foreign national, you usually need a work permit. Some jobs are exempt, or you may already have status that allows you work.

To be eligible you must meet several basic requirements:

  • Prove you will leave Canada when your permit expires.

  • Show you have enough money to support yourself (and family, if applicable).

  • Have no criminal record and be in good health (if a medical exam is required).

  • Not plan to work for an employer listed as ineligible (or in certain restricted sectors).

  • Employer-specific work permit: You are allowed to work only for a specific employer, location, job title, and duration. Your employer may need an LMIA.

  • Open work permit: You can work for almost any eligible employer (with some exceptions). No job offer or LMIA required in many cases.

You may be eligible if you meet one of the specific circumstances, including:

  • You’re an international student who graduated from a DLI and are eligible for the PGWP.

  • You’re the spouse/common-law partner of certain foreign workers or students.

  • You’re in Canada and eligible for certain status changes or are at risk of abuse as a worker.

Most applicants are required to apply online through the official IRCC system. Whether you’re applying from outside or inside Canada, Verge Immigration can prepare, organize, and submit your Work Permit application on your behalf — ensuring every form, document, and detail meets IRCC’s requirements for a faster, stress-free approval process.

Documents can include: job offer or employer info (for employer-specific permits); proof of identity; proof of funds; any required LMIA or employer compliance; depending on your situation, other documents.

Yes — your work permit will list conditions you must follow (e.g., employer, job type, location, number of hours). If you don’t meet the conditions, you could lose your status.

If your permit is expiring or you want to change employers/conditions you may need to apply to extend or change your work permit before it expires. Waiting too long may affect your status.

  • In certain cases you may maintain status and continue working under “implied status” if you applied to extend and are awaiting a decision. Check the details in your specific case.

Yes — in many cases, your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit while you work in Canada, depending on your status and permit conditions.

Yes, you can hold both permits simultaneously under certain circumstances — you must show you’re eligible for both and how you’ll manage both commitments.

If you have an employer-specific permit and you change employer, job type, or location outside the conditions of your permit, you must apply for a new permit or change conditions. Failure to do so could invalidate your permit.

Yes — one of the major benefits of working in Canada is that you can build Canadian work experience, which may help in many PR pathways (e.g., Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs). While this is not automatic, many work permit holders plan for PR.

IRCC maintains lists and conditions. For example, even open work permit holders cannot work for employers who regularly offer striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages.
