&Express entry (ee)
Canada introduced Express Entry in 2015 to modernize the immigration process — shifting from slow, paper-based systems to a fast, merit-based model that rewards skilled workers ready to contribute to the Canadian economy. Instead of waiting years for manual processing, qualified candidates are ranked using a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)and invited to apply for permanent residence through regular draws.
At Verge Immigration, our experts help applicants understand their CRS score, improve eligibility, and prepare complete Express Entry files that meet Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) standards.
& WHAT IS
EXPRESS ENTRY
Express Entry is an online immigration management system used by the Government of Canada to select skilled workers for permanent residence. It’s not a single program—rather, it manages three major federal economic immigration pathways under one platform:
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW): For skilled professionals with foreign work experience and strong language ability who want to settle anywhere in Canada.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For individuals with at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada under a valid work permit.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST): For qualified tradespeople with work experience in eligible occupations and, in some cases, job offers from Canadian employers.
Candidates create an online Express Entry profile, providing details such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. IRCC then assigns a CRS score, ranking applicants against others in the pool. The highest-scoring profiles receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) during routine or category-based draws.
By helping IRCC process applications more efficiently and match immigrants to labour-market needs, Express Entry has become the backbone of Canada’s skilled immigration system—and a key opportunity for newcomers aiming for permanent residence.
& HOW IT WORKS?
The Express Entry process is designed to identify skilled individuals who are most likely to succeed in Canada’s labour market. It operates through a transparent, points-based ranking system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Here’s how the system works step by step:
Create an Express Entry profile – Candidates submit details about their age, education, work experience, and language scores in either English or French.
Enter the Express Entry pool – Eligible profiles are added to the candidate pool and automatically receive a CRS score based on the information provided.
Get ranked and compared – Every applicant in the pool is ranked according to their CRS score. The higher your score, the better your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Receive an ITA – The Government of Canada conducts draws every few weeks, selecting the highest-ranking candidates or those meeting specific category-based criteria such as healthcare, tech, or French proficiency.
Submit a permanent residence application – Once invited, candidates have 60 days to submit all supporting documents through the IRCC portal.
Application review and decision – IRCC reviews your file, verifying eligibility, documentation, and admissibility. Approved applicants become permanent residents of Canada.
Throughout this process, Verge Immigration assists clients with CRS score optimization, profile accuracy, document preparation, and application submission to minimize mistakes and maximize approval chances.
In short: Express Entry rewards skilled, well-prepared applicants—and with professional guidance, it can be one of the fastest ways to gain permanent residence in Canada.

& CRS SCORE AND RANKING SYSTEM
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the core of Canada’s Express Entry selection process. It determines who receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence by ranking all eligible candidates in the pool. Each profile is scored out of 1,200 points based on several key factors that reflect the applicant’s potential for success in Canada.
1. Core Human Capital Factors
Your age, education, official language skills, and work experience form the foundation of your CRS score. Younger applicants with higher education levels and strong English or French results often rank higher.
2. Spouse or Common-Law Partner Factors
If you are applying with a spouse or partner, their education, language ability, and Canadian work experience can also contribute additional CRS points to your overall score.
3. Skill Transferability Factors
This section rewards combinations of education, foreign work experience, and language ability. For example, a candidate with both a degree and high IELTS scores can gain significant bonus points.
4. Additional Points
Applicants can earn extra CRS points for factors such as:
A valid job offer from a Canadian employer
A provincial nomination (worth 600 points)
French language proficiency
Canadian study experience
Having siblings in Canada who are citizens or permanent residents
5. Draws and Invitations
IRCC conducts regular Express Entry draws, inviting top-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residence. Some draws are general, while others are category-based, targeting specific occupations or skills like healthcare, STEM, or French-speaking applicants.
